Building loyalty in your industry

Photo: cookingblogs.tomotiki.com

Yesterday I read a beautiful story  about Frank Sinatra on CNN. It is about the people who were truly loyal to him – even when he was considered a ‘has-been’.  The article talks about the owners of Sinatra’s favorite restaurant in New York, Patsy’s.  Sinatra’s fame and fortune was no more in the early 1950′s. People who previously fell over their feet to be his friends have now all disappeared.

His favourite restaurant has always been Patsy’s where the owners and staff treated him with respect and care. They were always compassionate towards him, even when he was a nobody. They even went as far as to open their restaurant on Thanksgiving so that Sinatra would have somewhere to spend his holiday. They weren’t planning on being open that Thanksgiving but they went above and beyond the call of service to provide Frank Sinatra with a place he could call home, they invited family members and made it very special for him. It was only years later that Sinatra became aware of his friends’ generosity.

Sinatra remained loyal to Patsy’s, even when he made his huge comeback in the late 50s.  He could’ve gone to any restaurant in the world, but he kept going to Patsy’s because of their loyalty to him.

This story made me think about how we build loyalty in our industry.  We not only service our clients, but also our colleagues.

I have experienced both sides of the industry – some people guarding their “secrets” very closely, and others that love to share everything they know. Luckily my experience has mostly been with the latter group of photographers. It is a fact of life that people who share and give to others have a greater amount of reciprocity in their own lives. They ooze success and they don’t keep it to themselves. You can spot them easily, they are the ones at meet-ups who everyone wants to chat to. I will refrain from naming them here but look out for more interviews and sharing of information by these professionals on the blog in months to come.

By being willing to share and interact, we service and support other wedding professionals and soon we will see loyalty in the relationships we build.

If we want other professionals to be loyal to us, we need to show loyalty first.

Do you go above and beyond for others in the industry? How do build loyalty with your colleagues?

I AM ENOUGH

Dirt road, Western Cape (taken with Canon 40D, 17-85mm lens).

We all have those days when something happens that knocks you to the ground and you find it extra hard to get up, when you are plagued with self-doubt and a sense of insecurity.

“Sometimes it is much easier to believe the bad stuff that we don’t even want to hear the good stuff. We are afraid that all that is holding us together is the armor we’ve put on to survive what is hard” - I love the books by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. Paging through one of her books the past few days I found the courage to believe in myself and ignore the little voices that threaten to strip me from my creativity and confidence. Courage to believe that I am a good mother even though my children watch too much TV and don’t eat healthy enough, courage to believe that I will take better care of myself and my own health, that I am deserving of the blessing of being able to do what I love and that even though my intentions are sometimes misunderstood I am inherently by nature a well-meaning kindred spirit.

And by believing this, the love and blessings flow so richly back into my life – the soft touch of my daughter’s lips against my cheek followed by a hug that speaks of a deep and unconditional love, the encouraging words of a partner that is enormously proud of me and what I have achieved in such a short time and the comfort of a cosy bed to lie in and listen to the cold wind howling outside my window. It is in these moments that I have to take a step back, look at the bigger picture of this world and my part in it and realize that if I never pressed the shutter again, never posed another person, attended a workshop, read a photo blog, or bought a new piece of equipment, never again thought of composition or exposure, never chased the light again… it would be okay. It would truly be okay.

And then I echo the words of Oriah: ” It’s a day when I rest easy in a mysterious knowing that there is enough – enough time and money and energy and heart in the world and in my life, a day when I know I am enough”.

LION OR MOUSE?

BY HANNELIE ELLIOTT

I am currently busy reading my children bedtime stories from Aesop’s Fables. I am once more amazed at the incredible life lessons contained in these simple short tales. I have decided to use my love for storytelling to remind my readers of the value that is taught in some of the most well-known stories that we all loved as children. I will start with this one…

The Lion and the Mouse

A Lion was awakened from sleep by a Mouse running over his face. Rising up angrily he caught the Mouse and was about to kill him, when the Mouse piteously entreated saying : “If you would only spare my life, I would be sure to repay your kindness” The Lion laughed and let him go. It happened shortly after this that the Lion was caught by some hunters, who bound him by strong ropes to the ground. The Mouse, recognizing his roar, came and gnawed the rope with his teeth, and set him free, exclaiming: You ridiculed the idea of my ever being able to help you not expecting to receive from me any repayment of your favor; now you know that it is possible for even a Mouse to confer benefits on a Lion.”

Have you ever thought that everyday, in a multitude of situations, you are either the Lion or the Mouse? If we apply this to photography you might think there are a few lions (experts) that you are cautious of approaching and that they could snap you in one blow if they wanted (ok, that sounds a bit extreme, but you know people like that, right?) And sometimes you are the lion who can’t be bothered by the little mouse wanting help on the basics of photography or business skills that you have mastered years ago.

I too had some bad experiences as a mouse being ridiculed by the lions when I started out in the business of photography. But knowing my own strengths and being confident in my ability to offer something beautiful, I was afforded with many opportunities to grow and develop a roar of my own. While I feel that I have done well in realising my dream of becoming a photographer, I am still a mouse in so many respects, gnawing at the challenges thrown at me everyday.

On the other hand, I hope that there are certain aspects of photography that I will master in years to come, but that I will have the ability to still observe and accept the seemingly small tokens of wisdom offered by someone just starting out, someone that is still in awe of photography and has stumbled upon a gem that I have missed. Being a lion of course has plenty advantages, one of which is the respect of your peers and the awesomeness factor that goes with being one of the best. But this should never give one a false sense of security or the inability to recognize when you need to improve or make changes. Failing to do that will surely  lead to stifled creativity and self-imprisonment.

The lesson from this very simple story is that we all have different strengths and weaknesses – if we are open to accept wisdom from every person we meet, we will be surprised at our ability to learn and grow.

I hope you all have a splendid week of growth and discovery!
